Broadcast Premiere of ‘sonata (1957)’

Broadcast Premiere of Sonata (1957), a film about Donald Harris

Watch the broadcast premiere of my film about the distinguished American composer Donald Harris and his first professional composition, the Sonata for Piano (1957). CUNY TV in NYC (channel 75 on Time Warner; channel 77 on RCN) will broadcast the film this Sunday, August 28th, at 4 PM (http://www.cuny.tv/show/filmsoncunytv/PR2000070).

This Sonata is Harris’ first independently composed work while he lived in Paris as a young man, completed after he left Nadia Boulanger’s studio and before he began working with Max Deutsch. In Harris’ own words, he loved every note; he caressed every note, and he felt liberated to compose freely in a style of his own choosing after an unremarkable start with Boulanger.

The film includes interviews with Donald Harris, the pianist Veronica Jochum, and the conductor and composer Gunther Schuller. The film also includes my complete performance of this beautiful sonata.

If you have a moment, I hope you’ll tune in to watch.
